Feb 1: Saint Brigid

Saint Brigid was born out of wedlock in Ireland around 450. Her dad was a pagan chieftain, Dubthach, and her mother was a Christian slave woman. He sold her mother to a new master until Brigid was old enough to come back and work for him. Her mom had her baptized as a baby and raised her Catholic. When she went back to work for Dubthach she had a love for the poor. She gave many things to the poor and her father did not like that since she wasn’t 100% part of the family- she was a servant. Her father wanted her to get married but she knew she was called to consecrated life. Her father finally let her pursue it and gave her the means to. St Brigid went on to be one of the first to officially organize women’s religious life in Ireland. She worked and prayed and she founded many more convents for sisters through out Ireland.
