Born, it is believed, in Sicily around 231, St. Agatha is one of the most highly regarded virgin saints. From her youth she was exceptionally beautiful and lived a life completely devoted to God, prayer, and the Church. She became a consecrated virgin, however, given her extreme beauty, men still desired and sought her.
One of the men who sought her, Quintianus, was a high ranking diplomat who thought he could turn her away from her vow. Quintianus, after constant rejection by Agatha, decided to have her arrested for being a Christian and brought to himself so he could act as Judge in her trial.
Even facing the prospect of torture and death, Agatha prayed for courage and continued to observe her vow and dedication to God. Enraged, Quintianus imprisoned her in a brothel in hopes of weakening her resolve. When that failed he handed her over to further imprisonment and also torture increasingly horrifying tortures including having her breasts cut off and any medical attention withheld. Jesus came to her aide continuously during this time and supported her with miraculous healings and visions.
Around 251 St. Agatha is belived to have left this world and moved on to Heaven.
