Saint Anthony of Egypt was moved by the Gospel passage that says to go and sell what you have and give to the poor and gave his large inheritance to the poor. He lived in solitude and taught many the self discipline of living that way. People would come to him for healing and guidance. When he was 54, people urged him to start a monastery and he did. The monastery was more like personal cells than a communal house. When he was 88 he fought the Arian heresy. He died when he was 112 in solitude. Symbols of Saint Anthony of Egypt are a cross, pig and a book. The cross and pig symbolized the warfare with the devil and the book was because he liked the “book of nature” vs written books.
