Saint Marianne Cope was known as Mother Marianne of Molokai. She was born in Germany and emigrated to Utica, NY. She worked in a factory until she joined the Sisters of the 3rd Order of Saint Francis. She taught at the parish school then moved on to work in a hospital. During the leprosy outbreaks in Hawaii, the Hawaiian government was searching for help. They contacted over 50 different US and Canadian religious communities. When Saint Marianne’s community was asked, her and 6 other sisters went to Hawaii to help the Kakaako Receiving Station where people with suspected leprosy would go. Later, she opened a hospital and school for girls. She started a home for unprotected women and girls in Molokai, took over at St Damien’s home for men and boys. Saint Marianne has inspired many Hawaiian people to pursue a vocation in the religious life.
