cassiemeadows

Born in 1858 in Philidelphia, Katharine Drexel was born into a wealthy family. Her life took a profound turn after caring for her step mother for three years, who suffered from a terminal illness. Her whole life, she had been interested in the Native Americans and after the encouragment of Pope Leo XIII began missionary work to them.

Although Katherine could have married, she decided in 1889, with the help of Bishop O'Conner, to dedicate her life to serving the Native Americans. After over three years, Mother Katherine and her first group of nuns, organized under the name "Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Colored", began opening a series of foundations. Her greatest achievement was opening Xavier University in New Orleans.
